Diabetic Eye Testing
When undergoing a diabetic eye test, expect a thorough evaluation focused on detecting any diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the tiny blood vessels at the back of your eye. The process typically involves dilating your pupils with eye drops to allow for a detailed examination of the retina, where signs of abnormalities in the blood vessels may appear. Our skilled Optometrists use advanced imaging technologies including fundus imaging scans to capture high-resolution images of the retina, aiding in the early detection of such changes. Throughout the procedure, you can expect clear explanations of each step and the results, ensuring you understand your eye health status and any recommended treatments or follow-ups. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities as we work together to safeguard your vision against the effects of diabetes.
Note: Diabetic eye testing requires longer consultation times than that of a general eye examination as a result of dilating eye drops. We strongly recommend that you do not drive immediately after having your eyes dilated. Dilated pupils can significantly increase sensitivity to light and blur your vision, making it difficult to see clearly in bright sunlight or at night. We advise that you arrange a relative or friend to drive you home after your appointment and follow the advice of your eye care professional regarding when it is safe for you to resume driving.

During a routine eye test, you can expect a comprehensive assessment of your vision and overall eye health. The process begins with a review of your medical history and any concerns you may have regarding your vision. Your visual acuity will then be evaluated using an eye chart to determine how well you see at various distances. The optometrist will then examine the health of your eyes, checking for signs of conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. This may involve a free retinal scan to look at the structures of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve. Depending on your age and risk factors, additional tests such as tonometry to measure eye pressure may be performed. Throughout the exam, your Optometrist will explain each step and discuss any findings with you, ensuring you have a clear understanding of your eye health and any recommended treatments or follow-up appointments.
All general eye examinations at Northern Optical are bulk billed with a valid medicare card, including specialised services such as Vic Roads assessments or diabetic eye testing.
Contact Lenses
When getting tested for contact lenses, you can expect a detailed consultation focused on finding the right lenses for your vision and lifestyle. The process typically begins with a comprehensive general eye exam to assess your vision and eye health, ensuring your eyes are suitable for contacts. Your eye care provider will discuss your preferences, such as daily disposables or extended wear, and will measure the curvature and size of your eyes to determine the correct fit. You may also be provided with trial lenses to ensure comfort and proper vision correction. Guidance on proper insertion, removal, and care of lenses will be provided, along with information on potential risks. Your Optometrist will work closely with you to find the most suitable lenses that meet your needs, ensuring you leave feeling confident and informed about your new contact lens routine.
Dry Eye Management
Managing dry eye involves a multifaceted approach tailored to alleviating discomfort and monitoring eye health. Treatment typically begins with identifying underlying causes, such as environmental factors, medical conditions and medical history. Your Optometrist may recommend artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to alleviate dryness and irritation. Lifestyle adjustments, such as warm compresses, breaks from digital screens and humidifiers can also help. In some cases, prescription medications or procedures to block tear drainage may be considered. Managing dry eye is an ongoing process that involves regular follow-ups to assess progress and adjust treatment as needed, ensuring long-term relief and maintaining optimal eye comfort and health.
Foreign Body Removal
Whether it’s a metal shaving, speck of plastic or other foreign object, the process begins with a thorough examination to locate and assess the object on the surface of the eye or beneath the lids. Using specialized tools, our Optometrists will carefully remove the foreign body with the assistance of an anesthetic eye drops, ensuring minimal discomfort and reducing the risk of further injury. Post-removal, the eye may be rinsed to clear any residual particles, and appropriate medication along with follow-up care may be prescribed to promote healing and prevent infection. Prompt attention to foreign body removal is crucial in maintaining clear vision and protecting the eye from potential complications, so we strongly recommend that you notify us at the first sign of discomfort or irritation.
Children’s Eyecare
Early detection of visual decline in children is crucial as it allows for timely intervention in preventing potential learning difficulties and eye strain. Children may not always communicate their visual difficulties, making routine eye exams critical in identifying common conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eye). Addressing these issues early can significantly improve their quality of life and performance in school and extracurricular activities. Additionally, regular eye exams also play a role in detecting underlying health concerns that may manifest in the eyes, providing valuable insights into their overall well-being. Investing in your child’s eye health through regular testing not only promotes clear vision but also supports their overall well-being and success in various aspects of life.
Myopia Control & Management
Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a refractive error that affects the ability to see distant objects clearly while nearby objects remain clear. It typically develops during childhood and is primarily caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Monitoring and managing the progression of myopia is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, myopia tends to worsen over time, especially during childhood and adolescence. High levels of myopia (severe nearsightedness) increase the risk of developing sight-threatening conditions later in life, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic maculopathy. These conditions can lead to permanent vision impairment if not detected and managed early. Early intervention not only helps maintain clearer vision but also reduces the long-term risks associated with high myopia, promoting better eye health and quality of life.
There are several types of myopia control options available to help significantly slow down the progression of myopia:
- Specialised spectacle lenses: such as Stellest Lenses
- Specialised soft contact lenses: such as Misight 1 Day Contact Lenses
- Atropine eye drops: such as low dose atropine (0.01-0.05%) from a compounding pharmacy
- Specialised hard contact lenses: such as Orthokeratology
Each of these options should be discussed with your Optometrist to determine the most suitable approach based on individual circumstances and severity of myopia. Regular monitoring and adjustments are essential to ensure effective myopia control over time.
Colour Vision Assessment
Colour vision assessments are typically conducted using specialized tests, such as the Ishihara Test, which consists of plates with patterns of coloured dots that form numbers or shapes discernible only to those with normal colour vision. These tests help detect the type and severity of colour vision deficiencies, commonly known as colour blindness. By identifying deficiencies early, individuals can receive appropriate support and accommodations, if necessary, to navigate tasks requiring colour differentiation effectively. Colour vision assessments are particularly relevant in professions like aviation, transportation, and certain types of manufacturing where accurate colour perception is relied upon for safety and performance. Regular evaluations ensure that any changes in colour vision are promptly identified and managed, promoting optimal visual function.
